Experiential learning at the supermarket

Preschool children learn by observing and participating in actual actions or practical experiences. Therefore, experiential learning is indispensable in the preschool education program at WIS. Knowledge gained from directly participating in activities helps children remember it better and longer. Also, observing and interacting with the real world makes the lessons lively and exciting and allows the kiddos to engage better in learning.

Today, the WIS children had enjoyable experiential learning at the supermarket. Let’s see what the WIS children learned during their shopping trip.

Children explored the items on sale at the supermarket. The shelves are neatly arranged and divided into areas: vegetables, meat, fish, household appliances, chemicals, and confectionery. Each product has a price tag. Walking around the store, the WIS children learned a lot of vocabulary about the names of the products at the supermarket.

Children also learned and experienced shopping, especially how to purchase an item and spend money within the allowed budget. After choosing a needed item with the allowed allowance, WIS children stood in line at the checkout counter and politely communicated with the cashier. How commendable!

WIS teachers also introduced children to cash papers with different monetary values, including 1,000VND/2,000VND/5,000VND/10,000VND.

Today’s experiential learning gave the children a rich experience. It helped them learn practical shopping skills such as purchasing an item, using money, choosing needed products, spending within a budget, etc.
